Search engine advertising often referred to as Pay per click (PPC) advertising has seen a phenomenal growth rate with Forrester estimating that spend in Europe alone is set to reach €3 billion by 2010. A typical advertisement consists only of text which is split into a short title and slightly longer description. These adverts appear at various places on the page when a user types in a particular search term into a search engine and are often referred to as sponsored links. The major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN have their own PPC programmes whilst smaller search engines tend to have relationships with the larger search companies ad programmes.
