Environmental Database

  • The largest environmental intranet within BP.
  • Integrated with a number of back-end data formats.
  • A single interface to all emissions and emissions-reduction data within the organisation.
  • Advanced and intuitive search methods.
  • Positive impact on global emissions.

Background

BP, Europe’s largest energy company, has one of the strongest environmental policies in the world.

Objective

In 1999 BP launched an initiative to enable each of their 100,000 employees to access one of the largest environmental databases in the world that stores global emissions information and emission reduction options. This database gathers all the environmental emissions data and reduction options knowledge held within the organisation, and makes it available through a single interface.

Result

Imano devised a back-end data model that would allow analysis of the emissions data over time and by global business units. The reduction options detailed complex dependencies and success stories that could be repeated throughout the organization. The intuitive front-end brought in new users, and made it easy to obtain information that was previously unavailable to them. Our focus on navigation and search techniques enabled users to filter through huge amounts of data in different formats, and carry out complex analysis as quickly as possible. This project has been a major achievement for both BP and Imano and has provided real business value, as well as a positive impact on the global environment.
